김치 Kimchi
Kimchi is a traditional Korean fermented dish made of vegetables with varied seasonings. It is most commonly made with napa cabbage and other vegetbles such as radish, green onion, chive and cucumber. Kimchi is the most common banchan or side dish, in Korean cuisine.

Kimchi tantalizing and uniquely pungent mixture of fermented vegetables. Cabbage and radishes are the most commonly used Vegetables in Kimchi today. These are combined with more aromatic veegetables, sauces, salt and seasonings to create a food that nourishes the Korean soul as much as the body.

In fact, kimchi provides both physiological and psychological comfort to Koreans.
On a cold winter evening, a humble meal of piping hot rice, soybean-paste soup and cabbage kimchi, just taken from an earthenware jar buried in the backyard, is as satisfying to most Koreans as a banquet at a luxurious restaurant.

Kimchi has been part of the Korean diet for centuries and is prepared in as many as 300 variations, depending on the region, season and personal preference.

Throughout the world, people have always eaten some form of fermented vegetables, usually cabbage, for more than 4000years.


Scientific Research
Kimchi contains some 42milligramsof vitamin Cper 100grams, more than half the U.S. recommended daily allowance. The capsaicin from kimchi's red chili peppers is also rich in vitain E, which works with vitamin C as an antioxidant. Also Kimchi is high in fiber, which is necessary for proper digestion, and is rich in minerals and vitains, including thiamin, riboflavin, calcium and iron. It is also surprisingly low in calories, only 33 calories per cup.

Figure Skate + Korea ?



김연아, Yuna Kim (金姸兒)
South Korean figure skater. She is mostly known for earning the 2010 Olympic champion in ladies singles with world record, and also the 2009 World champion, the 2009 Four Continents champion, a three-time(2006-7, 2007-8, 2009-10) Grand Prix Final champions.

Kim is the first South Korean figure skater to win a medal at an ISU Junior or Senior Grand Prix event, ISU Championship and the Olympic Games. She is one of the most highly recognized athletes and media figures in South Korea.

Skating Techniques
Kim landed her first triple jump at the age of 10, and at 12, she used five triple jumps in her figure skating program. When she was 14 years old, she landed her first triple-triple combination jump. Kim has executed three different jumps in competitions.
One of Kim's most famous moves is the bent-leg layover camel spin. She has performed the spin position since 2004. Although she did not invent the move, it is now sometimes called the Yuna spin or Yuna camel.
Her signature move is a layback ina bauer that she leads directly into a double axel jump, to a double axel-triple toe loop jump combination or to a double axel-double toeloop-double loop jump combination.
Kim is famous for her technical brilliance, wide ice coverage, high jumps, speed, superior and mature artistry, lyrical style, grace, and musicality, and for the great ice voverage of her jumps due to her high speed take-off.

식혜, Sikhye
A Traditional sweet Korean rice beverage, usually sered as a dessert. In addition to its liquid ingredients, sikhye also contains grains of cooked rice, and in some cases pine nuts.
Sikhye is made by pouring malt water onto cooked rice. The malt water steeps in the rice at typically 150 degrees Fahrenheit until grains of rice appear on the surface. The liquid is then carefully poured out, leaving the rougher parts, and boiled with suga. Ginger or jujube are often added for additional flavor. it is served chilled. In South Korea and Korean grocery stores wherever Korean communities are found, sikhye is readily available in cans or plastic bottle.

Alphabet + Korea ?


한글, Hangeul
The native alphabet of the Korean language, as distinguished from the logographic Sino-Korean hanja system. It was created in the mid-fifteenth century, and is now the official script of both North Korea and South Korea. Hangeul has also been adopted by some as a replaement writing system for the Austronesian Cia-Cia language.

한복, Hanbok
Hanbok is traditional Korean dress. It is often characterized by vibrant colors and simple lines without pockets. Although the term literaly means "Korean clothing", hanbok today often refers specifically to hanbok of Joseon Dynasty and is worn as semi-formal or formal wear during traditional festivals and celebrations.

- Both Dress and Hanbok contains tradition.

한지, Hanji or Korean Paper
Hanji is the traditional handmade paper from Korea. Hanji is made from the inner bark of Paper Mulberry, a tree native to Korea that grows well on its rocky mountainsides, known in Korean as dak. The formation aid crucial to making hanji is the ucilage that oozes from the roots of Hibiscus manihot. This substnce helps suspend the individaul fibers in wter.

Paper vs. Hanji?
- Hanji is so strong unlike its paper - like characteristics, that Hanji even has a saying:"Silk lasts 500 years and Hanji lasts 1000 years"
- hanji is a representative of using eco-friendly natural fiber which is also not harmful to human.

- unlike how Hanji was used only for writing down letters and to block the wind sneak in in the past, with Hanji's characteristic of anti-microbial, deodorant, quick drying, and far-infrared radiation, it is made into socks, shirts, ties, scarbes, chlothes, etc.

순대, Soondae(Sun-dae)

A Korean dish made generally by boiling or steaming cow or pig's interstines that are stuffed with various inredients.
It is a kind of blood sausage and believed to have eaten for a long time.

1. Sausage vs. Soondae?

- Both have many kinds of taste (squid, tofu, beef, vegetable, barley, glutinous rice and etc.)
- Can make another food by using Soondae
(Soondae boiled rice soup/ Soondae stir-fry/ Soondae stew)

Wine + Korea?




막걸리, Makkolli
Korea's oldest and most popular alcoholic beverage is makolli. It is usually reffered to as nongju, or farmer's wine, but farmers are not the only ones who have enjoyed it.
It is made from rice which gives it milky, off white color, and sweetness.

Wine vs. Makkolli ?

- The milky wine has a rather low alcohol content of 6 to 8 percent and a somewhat sour yet refreshing taste because it is still in the process of fermenting.

- It also contains a good amount of carbon dioxide gas, due to the ongoing fermentation, adds to its thirst-quenching quality.

- Makkolli contains a good amount of rice protein, as well as citamins B1, B2 and other B complexes such as inositol and choline. It has about 0.8 percent organic acid, which contributes to its sour taste and thirst-quenching properties and increases a person's metabolism. Many Koreans who live to a healthy old age are makkolli drinkers.

- For this reason, makkolli was an important part of Korean life; it was enjoyed by people when they relaxed after a days' hard work or when they celebrated and comforted one another on special occasions such as weddings and funerals.

빈대떡, Bindaetteok
A variety of jeon, a Korean style pancake. Itis made of ground mung beans, with green onions, kimchi, or pepers cooked in a frying pan.
